Flash vs. HTML5

In recent few months we have heard lots of nonsense about Flash vs. HTML5 fight. Apple is opposing Flash to run on their iOS platforms like iPhone, IPad, etc. Even ‘Steve Jobs’ has criticized Flash in his open letter on Apple website. The facts are really different from the picture being created.

Let us see some facts which will focus on the points which describes that the war is nonsense and just to make an attention towards the HTML5.

Who is controlling?
Flash Platform
Adobe Systems

WHATWG” Committee made up by Opera Software, Mozilla Foundation and Apple.
Here we have to make a note that Apple is one of the controllers of HTML5. We all know that Apple has history of dominating over its own hardware and software. They do not allow anyone to play with their hardware and software. Whereas; Flash has its own development environment, which will affect iPhone development by Apple,if Flash is allowed on iPhone. It could compete with the iTunes store for different media distributed by Apple. This makes a large difference in Flashand HTML5.
Most Selling fact for HTML5
Yes video. Video delivery through web is the most selling fact behind HTML5. ‘Steve Jobs’ has mentioned that “Flash is not necessary to watch video over the web”.
Definitely, HTML5 supports basic video players. But, if you want advanced video players which have streaming or interactive features with video effects then? Then you have to choose Flash or some other technology.
Another thing which is being described by various columnists is, “You cannot develop website in Flash completely, and it will require HTML to run on web”. That’s why HTML5 is best for web.
True,if HTML is required to run the Flash over web then why not HTML5. But the fact is both Flash and HTML5 require other language support to run the video or interactive content over the web, such as; JavaScript. So, none of them are independent.
SWF is not allowed in HTML5?

As far as I know, you can still use embed tag in HTML5. If embed tag is there then why to worry? You can embed swf. Check “HTML5fundamentals, Part 1: Getting your feet wet”.

So you don’tneed to develop your videos and interactive elements in different environments for HTML5 you can still use Flash in it.
Adobe is Opposing HTML5?

I don’tthink so! Adobe has developed Adobe Edge for creating animated web content using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. This will add Motion and Interaction Design with ease for HTML5.

Adobe has already declared that they will aggressively contribute to HTML5. Read: Flash toFocus on PC Browsing and Mobile Apps; Adobe to More Aggressively Contribute toHTML5

Flash requires Latest Browser and Flash Players
Flashdevelop its Flash Player and upgrades its technology for better user experience. It usually requires latest player for the same. Developers always need a better result from Flash because of high demand from clients regarding vector graphics and video. And hence, it requires always a latest browser and Flash Player.

Yes this is ridicules to always keep on updating the player and browser.
So, do you think HTML5 will not require any browser upgrade? Will it run on IE7 / IE8?
No. it will also require upgrades in its browser technology as HTML5 is emerging technology. Most of the browsers are still not compatible with it. Even Safariby Apple, on Windows platform fails to run HTML5 videos.
So there does not seem any fight. Both can be used for better user experience and no one will lose the race.

Rich Internet Applications (RIA)

Rich Internet Applications commonly known as RIA’s are nothing but the small programs or package of small programs which comprises rich user interface (UI) for user’s visual satisfaction and interactivity for user’s basic to advanced needs from a computer program. Although its name has “Internet” it can be used across the desktops and browsers. These can communicate from desktop based application to browser based application and vice-versa.

RIA’s are popular for richer and engaging user experience. With the help of Flash platform these can be developed with ease. RIA application can give customized results to user such as a quick preview of budget in various types of charts just with few clicks; not only with perfection but in a trendy way. All this can be done within seconds. Executives can use it to change their reports just before they start presentation in meeting with current status of market which is updated from internet.

Presentation developed from these applications can have up to date data collected from various sources as it gets connected to databases over the internet servers. The same presentation can be sent to others from these RIA’s.

RIA’s can be used on Desktops, smartphones, television sets, KIOSK’s, PDA’s and other many more devices. RIA’s can be used in Finance Industry, Marketing, Medical, Government Sectors, Media, etc. etc. for generating and delivering various demands raised everyday by millions of user’s.

RIA’s developed with Flash Platform and delivered through Flash Player or AIR on Desktops, PDA’s and Browsers. As compared to other RIA’s the RIA’s developed with Adobe Flash Platform have minimal development time, better engaging experience and most importantly they are cost effective. These RIA’s require small amount of disk space (if designed efficiently) over the other RIA’s.

Other than Flash Platform, RIA’s are commonly developed on Sun Microsystems’ Java and Microsoft Silverlight platforms.

Art Challenges the Technology and Technology Challenges the Art

I was just watching the short film of Pixar regarding its history. It’s just amazing when five people start an animation company and only one of them is the Artist. This short film emphasises on the dedicated work done by the founders and workers of Pixar during past years since its launch.

An inspiration point to everyone from the short films developed by Pixar in its first few years is that they were not having any QUAD core graphics card based processing devices for their help. They were using small machines which were able to work on textual programming inputs rather than today’s 3D or 2D. They were not assisted with today’s accessories like; Pen tablets, touch screens, motion capture etc.

They completely challenged technology available at that time with their skills and now as technology is developed it challenges the art inside them to produce high quality outputs.
That’s why they say that “Art Challenges the Technology and Technology Challenges the Art”. Its true when we saw Toy Story a complete 3 Dimensional computer generated movie at the early age of Animation industry and now Avatar a mixture of 3D, motion capture and real time shoot.

It was not possible in early 90’s to render high definition images where artist was not satisfied with technology as he was able to develop such HD images but not able to deliver it. That is the time when Art challenged Technology. Then as years passed and now technology is able to deliver the HD images within few seconds but Artist takes time to develop it. Here the Technology challenges the Art.

It has observed everywhere. Nature challenges humans and humans also challenge nature with their developments. Nature has Art to produce and maintain its ecosystem; which always challenges human nature of fighting for life. Then human develop some technology to use this art of nature in evolution; which challenges natures art with the technology.

In the same way Thinking is an Art and writing it with our hands is technology. Right now I am thinking very rapidly but same is not reaching up to my hands and that’s why I am not able to write everything which comes up in my mind. Let’s forget all of it and start the work…

Life is all in the timing and spacing….

Everyone must have heard about “Animation is all in the timing and spacing” said by Richard Williams. But what is Animation? It is the Life to objects, characters, sketches, dots, pixels, lines, squares, rectangles, circles, etc etc etc. Then why why don’t we call it Life is all in the timing and spacing?

We all have friends and relatives. But when to contact them is the time set by god. We won’t send sms to our relative at 2.00 AM to just time pass, but we will send it to friend. And when it’s time to tell something from your heart you tell it to your nearest someone there comes a spacing, the space between the two hearts.

Timing and spacing are always related to each other in a complex way. While animating it’s the complex thing to understand but when you get over it then it’s a simplest method to animate. In life we also face such situations. A boy in college try to make zero distance with almost every pretty girl in college, he thinks “are yarr iske dil aur mere dil me jo spacing hai who kam ho jaye” but not a every guy has a good time with him and hence everyone dosent get those pretty girls.

To win the timing and spacing in animation techniques people like Walt Disney spent their Life’s and we are enjoying the fruit i.e. Principles of Animations. But to feed us this fruit Disney has gone through lots of troubles and hard work in his life. He spent lots of time on thinking on the various things he was observing and then he illustrated it on canvas. His canvas is film reel where he gathered all his time spent on observations and he just adjusted this time in spaces between the frames of film. He enjoyed success because he spent his Life in Time and Spacing………
